Optimizing Airflow & Cooling for Your MAINGEAR PC

Every MAINGEAR desktop is engineered with carefully designed airflow patterns, premium cooling components, and custom tuned fan curves to deliver optimal thermals, acoustics, and performance.

To ensure your system performs at its best, it’s important to place and maintain your PC in an environment that allows for proper airflow and ventilation.

1. Give Your PC Room to Breathe

A high performance MAINGEAR PC moves a lot of air. Give it the space it needs to do its thing. Even the best cooling system can’t work miracles inside a cramped space.

We recommend:

  • At least 6 inches of clearance behind the PC
  • Open airflow around the front, sides, and top of the system
  • Keeping the rear of the system away from walls or tight corners

Avoid:

  • Enclosed cabinets or desk cubbies
  • Tight spaces with restricted airflow
  • Positioning the system directly against a wall

2. Keep All Vents Clear

Your PC relies on unobstructed airflow to maintain proper temperatures.

Make sure the following areas remain clear at all times:

  • Front intake vents
  • Side ventilation
  • Top exhaust vents
  • Rear exhaust vents

Even small obstructions such as papers, controllers, headphones, plushies, or the occasional forgotten band tee can trap heat and restrict airflow.

3. Avoid Placing Items on Top of the PC.

As tempting as it may be, your MAINGEAR PC is not designed to function as a shelf, cup holder, or snack station. We spent a lot of time engineering airflow through the top of the chassis. Please don’t block it with figures, junk mail, or yesterday’s energy drink.

4. Keep the System and Environment Clean

A little dust is normal. Letting it evolve into a second ecosystem inside your PC is less ideal. Dust buildup can restrict airflow, reduce cooling efficiency, and impact long term component reliability.

We recommend:

  • Light dusting around the PC as needed
  • Cleaning visible dust buildup monthly
  • Periodically inspecting vents and filters

If internal dust buildup becomes noticeable:

  1. Power down and unplug the PC
  2. Move the system to a safe, dry outdoor area
  3. Remove the side panels
  4. Use short bursts of compressed air to remove dust from the chassis

Important Safety Information

  • Always use compressed air canisters upright
  • Use only short bursts of air
  • Never continuously spin fans with compressed air, even while the PC is powered off

Improper compressed air use can damage components and create safety hazards. Damage caused by improper cleaning methods, misuse of compressed air, liquid exposure, or inadequate system ventilation is not covered under warranty.

5. Avoid Soft or Unstable Surfaces

Proper airflow underneath the chassis is equally important.

  • Avoid Carpet – Many systems pull fresh air through the bottom of the case, particularly for the power supply. Carpet can restrict airflow and trap dust and heat.
  • Avoid Beds or Blankets – Soft surfaces can block intake vents and severely restrict cooling.
  • Avoid Direct Floor Placement – While MAINGEAR cases include elevated feet for ventilation, floors typically collect the most dust and debris and increase the likelihood of accidental bumps or impacts.

Whenever possible, place your PC on a stable desk or elevated surface.

6. Avoid Eating or Drinking Around Your PC

Accidental spills are one of the most common causes of preventable hardware damage.

While we know better than anyone that gaming and snacks often go hand in hand, we strongly recommend keeping food and drinks away from your system whenever possible to help prevent accidental damage.

7. Avoid Smoking or Vaping Near Your PC

  • Smoke and vapor residue can accumulate inside your system over time and negatively impact cooling performance and component longevity.
  • Your PC continuously pulls in surrounding air, but unlike an air purifier, it does not filter contaminants before they reach internal components.
  • If smoking or vaping near your PC is unavoidable, we strongly recommend using a HEPA grade air purifier in the same room.
  • Even in non smoking environments, air purifiers with ionizers can help reduce airborne dust and improve overall air quality around your system. Your PC will appreciate the cleaner air, and honestly, so will everyone else in the room.
